Sloppy Joe Jalfrezi

Serves 8

  • This dish is similar to a North Indian ground meat curry known as keema. We like to serve it on a soft bun for a spicy riff on the classic Sloppy Joe.
  • 1 medium white or yellow potato
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 jar Maya Kaimal Jalfrezi Curry
  • ½ cup frozen peas
  • 8 soft sandwich or burger buns
  • Peel the potato, and cut into ½-inch dice. Place in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over high, reduce heat and simmer until the potatoes are cooked through, about 5 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium high. Add the ground meat and sauté until browned, about 6 minutes. Tilt the skillet and spoon off excess fat if you like.
  • Stir in Maya Kaimal Jalfrezi Curry, cooked potatoes, frozen peas and ¼ cup water. Simmer gently until thoroughly hot. The mixture should be slightly thickened but still saucy.
  • Split the buns and serve generous spoonfuls of the mixture onto each bun. Serve warm with a dollop of thick yogurt, and a side lightly dressed greens.
